Red + Green + Blue

1975

HD Video (original 16mm film)

Mute, colour, 8 minutes 21 seconds (Loop)

2018 Installation version

Red plus Green plus Blue, the sixth part (of Sheepman and the Sheared series of films), explores systems and colour activation within the RGB photo emulsion reversal process, Colour is abstracted as a series of circle images on 16mm film looped, following an analogue generative system of three loops with calculated intervals. The abstractions come from the colours needed in the RGB film emulsion to print the Blue sky, the Green grass and Red berries. creating complimentary colours (and image) in the overlaps of exposure.

The HD scan of the film introduced another dynamic element in converting to digital RGB and was first exhibited as an installation at the Mosman Gallery, Sydney, NSW. 2023.
This project was initiated in the Devon studio and completed at the London Filmmakers’ Co-operative Workshop (1973-1975). (image at right) magazine colour image samples collage/schematic of filmstrip combinations.
